One of the reasons we decided to go to Zakynthos was to see the turtles!  For several years I have dreamed about it and finally the dream came true. At the end of September isn`t a very good time because there are not many of them but nevermind!  I talked to one lady from the UK and she told me that as she was in Zakynthos at the end of May there were plenty of turtles, the natives also said to visit the island during May and June if you want to see the big turtles.  As for the small turtles, they hatch right on the beach so you can easily see them.  Turtles usually hatch at night or in the morning, therefore, from 20.00 pm to 7.00 am beaches (which are turtles nest) are closed. We got up early in the morning and went to the beach as soon as it opened. It was already quite a few people there who came with the hope of seeing baby turtle, as well as volunteers who check every morning for the turtles hatching and help poor individuals who have not made it to the sea at night.

To see the big turtles we went on a boat tour with a glass bottom (yellow submarine). I thought it would be great and that I would see so many of them but we were very disappointed as the trip sailed an hour late and we only saw one turtle and then turned round and went back to the port.  For this pleasure we paid 15 Euros per person!
While we waited for this cruise and we saw two turtles which is more than the tour!  If I had known that turtles came so close to the beach I would have rather rent a motorboat or pedalo and binoculars and embark on their quest. Probably we would have had more fun and satisfaction.  If you think you don`tt know where to find turtles yourself, then just see where float boats with tourists are and swim after them, a lot of people do that.  Below are some photos of an adult Caretta-caretta. The picture does not reflect the size of the turtle (they are usually about 120cm), I really recommend to see it, if you have such occasions, it makes a big impression.
